How We Made The Acorn - Restoration

In one six and a half minute video we show the process of how we made the music video "Restoration" by The Acorn. We witness Winston walk down Clinton St with a mini picnic table, Nick Wallace show us the location in what seemed to be a 3 mile walk and Rolf Klausener almost fall out of a production truck that barrels down an old tractor path.

Thanks to our dedicated crew, we managed to pull off two night shoots during the long weekend and create The Acorn's first single off "No Ghost".

Acorn Pre Production

Here is a teaser from an upcoming music video we did for The Acorn. Look for it later this month!

We made the creatures from old computer packaging/foam peanuts and scraps from older videos (Reverie Sound Revue). We constructed the creatures at our studio and then took them over to Halo Halo Screenprinting Studio to be painted and silkscreened.

Jeff and Andrew took care of the detailing as well as printing some of their collage onto aged italian cotton, silk and other material that would let light shine through. We then did a test to see how the light looked under the costume.

Then came shooting, which posed a bunch of challenges for our team. We had to trek through soy fields to our shooting location that was just inside of a forest that went 4km deep. It took 15 minutes to get from our shooting location back to base camp where we had food and a toilet!

We had Darren Stamos rig up an amazing dolly rig for the picnic table set up. You can see it being put onto the dolly track in the picture below.

Aesop: Kingdom of Frogs Finished!

Last fall we had the pleasure of being home to Jesse Ewles' first Bravofact funded short "Aesop: Kingdom of Frogs". I got to create the main set (swamp) where his vibrant puppets would move about and interact. Brett was asked to do some puppeteering and animation and you can see him on set in the photos below.

The set was mostly organic material scavenged from the train tracks near our studio. Moss and plants were kept moist with a spray bottle, and nd gels and lubricant were used to recreate the look of water. We then cut holes in the set to allow for our hands to reach the frog puppets. Almost everything used was completely recycled materials from the Reverie Sound Revue video in combination with the natural elements.

Making the Closet Monster a.k.a "Crystal Murkin"

We made this monster from a lot of reused pieces of the Ohbijou - New Years set along with a bunch of trash and scraps we found on the street (we even added a real piece of stale pizza). The idea was that the monster was created inside of the fashion designer's closet from a bunch of her accumulated junk. It was our goal to create a monster that was functional but at the same time very bulky and thrown together.

Two New Music Videos

Both videos were made in the past month at our studio, for two great local acts. Check them out! The first one is for Romo Roto, shot quickly at our space on blue screen and then edited by Brett and myself and featuring collage work by Andrew, Jeff and Randy Gagne. The second is a video for Man Made Hill a.k.a Randy Gagne. He stopped by our studio with a quick idea involving improvisational dance moves projected in layers. Included are some stills from the shoot.

This one is pretty much all Brett Long. We conceived the old/new idea of "playdough-scoping" whereby we would re-shoot footage off of an lcd monitor, animating clay over top. The promo was made for Wham City, a collective of artists based out of Baltimore who were touring through Toronto.
